Thien Mu Pagoda is located on Ha Khe Hill, right at the side of Perfume River. Thien Mu Pagoda is about 5 kilometers from center of Hue City. Thien Mu Pagoda was built in 1601 by Nguyen Hoang Kinh, the first king of Nguyen Dynasty. Before Thien Mu Pagoda was built on Ha Khe Hill, there was a small pagoda which called Thien Mo or Thien Mau and this was the pagoda of Cham people. A story saying that, when Nguyen Hoang Lord became the chairman of Quang Nam Province, he came to Hue in order to look for the new location to build the foundation for the Nguyen Dynasty. One time, Nguyen Hoang Lord rode the house along Perfume River, he saw a small hill, raised up from deep blue water of Perfume River which looks like a dragon turning around and the hill was named Ha Khe. Local people told Nguyen Hoang Lord, at night, there was an old lady appeared on top of the hill and told people that a lord would be here to build his regime and turn this area to be the center of a powerful country. Nguyen Hoang Lord was happy and he ordered people build the pagoda on top of the hill, face to Perfume River and named as Thien Mu Pagoda. (The mother of heaven or the mother from heaven).
